THE GUN
It is the need for superior ability to destroy swiftly that motivated
man into the research of science and technology to invent GUN. Before this invention, the ancient war was fought with hand-made tools, like sword, bow and arrow, and spear. Their production were laborious, time consuming and exhaustive. The invention and use of Gun has lasted for almost two centuries and over time it has been reduced to a portable size, Swift and durable. The possession of which gives the owner added courage, assurance and a feeling of superiority. It is sustained like a dome.
Before then, the Romans had not invented gun, if they had, their Empire would have expanded beyond the record of Europe and Africa that we have.
Britain with their technological knowledge had improved their invention that gave them more superior power and bigger Empire. Their achievement and legacy are still utilized by its colonies.
In its various forms, a gun is called a pistol, rifle, revolver and it can be operated in all the nooks and crannies of the World, conveniently.
The conquests of the British Empire can be attributed to the effectiveness of its war weapon – the Gun especially. So also was the victory of America over Britain on its War of Independence. So much of Gun was utilized and George Washington led America to victory. If there is any aggressive weapon of victory as a unit it is the gun. It has been grossly proliferated virtually by all countries of the world for fighting. There was no nation whose history is not punctuated by civil unrest and preponderant use of gun. And no nation can be classified as super power unless it has an arsenal of weapon of destruction including guns.
In 1861, a civil war broke out between the industrial north of America led by President Abraham Lincoln called the Union soldier (Yankees) for the unification of the states into one country, and the leaders of the agricultural south that assembled themselves into the Confederate south. A major bone of contention was the insistence of the north that the slave workers should be liberated, but the owners of south states disagreed and waged a war. Of course, the black slaves enlisted with the Union soldiers. There was a massive use by the warring parties of the gun – musket ( a long barrel gun).
The 1st world war (1914 – 1918) was fought between Germany on one side and Britain and France with American support on the other. The fatalities of this war was put at 40 million.
The 2nd World War was motivated by Adolf Hitler who rabble-roused the Germans into believing that they were a superior race to the rest of the world. Over 25 countries including the British colonies fought the war. It was escalated by Japan Navy that bombed the American naval base at
Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawai on December 7 1941 killing 2400 people and 1000 casualties in one massive aerial attack.Over 50 million people perished. It was the biggest war in history which lasted from 1939 to 1945.
Between 1950 and 1953, North and South Korea went to war called the Korean War with Soviet Union and America siding each region separately. Fatalities were 36,000. Then came the
Vietnam War, known as 2nd Indochina War or Resistance War against America. It was a war between the North Vietnam (Laos) and the South Vietnam which America aided. The war started in 1958 and ended in 1975 and casualties were 1.4 million. Aside from these major wars there had been a perennial hostilities between the Israelis and Palestinians in which gun was used as the major weapon and still being used. So also, there had been continuous skirmishes in several Asian and African countries with the use of guns In all of these cases the Gun has been the predominant tool of operation.
